Secret Underground witches Coven by Estruda Secret Underground witches Coven by Estruda
A Canadian couple who thought the ceremony sounded "so beautiful and romantic" have become the first to be married in a legal witch wedding in Britain in modern times.

Paul Cameron Rickards and Laurie Schedler of Ontario tied the knot - literally - in a pagan ceremony on Tuesday in an underground temple in Edinburgh's Old Town, in the first such ceremony to be authorised since the repeal of the Witchcraft Act in 1951.

They were married in a candlelit circle of flowers at the Niddry Street temple of the Source Coven of the Blue Dragon by the high priest George Cameron known as the Hermit, and the high priestess, who goes by the name of Lady Felina.

Bride and groom had their hands bound together and jumped over a broomstick as Lady Felina swept the circle to rid it of evil spirits.

Mr Cameron, who has practised witchcraft for more than 30 years, told the Scotsman: "This is the most important event since the repeal of the Witchcraft Act ... The ceremony is classed as a religious ceremony, which gives credence to the craft and recognises it as a religious faith. We expect hundreds ofweddings in future."

Pagans - or Wiccans, as followers of white witchcraft call themselves - date their beliefs and practices back to presumed folk activities supposed to date from pre-Christian times.

Neither the bride or groom are members of a Canadian coven but chose the service after being told about it by a friend. Ms Schedler said: "It's one of the oldest forms of marriage, tying the knot. It's just so old and romantic."

Mr Rickards added: "It appealed to our sensibilities, it appealed to everything we believe in with nature. It fitted perfectly."

This photo was taken in the summer of 2012. and is part of the underground city of old Edinburgh were the poor people actually lived many centrys ago while the better off lived above in the open air..

Oh my Gods...... This is stunning! I'd kill for me and my fellow Pagan friends to be able to meet for Sabbats in there... That would be a dream come true. xD

Incredible picture, but as a solitary witch that has never worked in a Coven, I have a question. - Doesn't the Circle having objects encroaching on it (in the back of the photo) create a hole in your Sacred Space?

You are quite right in what you say , i took this shot on an underground tour in Edinburgh , its not really part of the tour i think the guide went off track as i believe this is a private part of the underground tour. This particular coven of witches have permission to practise down here .. I myself am Pagan and hold moots and wheel of the year celebrations were i live , I cast a circle to create a sacred space with a sword , i then lay the sword flat on the edge of the circle and this becomes the doorway for all to enter ,should anybody wish to leave for whatever reason they step over the sword to exit the circle . The sword keeps the circle intact untill the circle is closed, again with the sword ..)0(..
