The Plague Doctor On Duty by Estruda The Plague Doctor On Duty by Estruda
A plague doctor (Italian: medico della peste, Dutch: pestmeester, Spanish: médico de la peste negra, German: Pestarzt) was a special medical physician who saw those who had the plague. They were specifically hired by towns that had many plague victims in times of plague epidemics. Since the city was paying their salary, they treated everyone: both the rich and the poor. They were not normally professionally trained experienced physicians or surgeons, and often were second-rate doctors not able to otherwise run a successful medical business or young physicians trying to establish themselves.

Plague doctors by their covenant treated plague patients and were known as municipal or "community plague doctors", whereas "general practitioners" were separate doctors and both might be in the same European city or town at the same time. In France and the Netherlands plague doctors often lacked medical training and were referred to as "empirics". In one case a plague doctor had been a fruit-seller before his employment as a physician.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, some doctors wore a beak-like mask which was filled with aromatic items. The masks were designed to protect them from putrid air, which (according to the miasmatic theory of disease) was seen as the cause of infection. Being a plague doctor was unpleasant, dangerous and difficult. Their chances of survival in times of a plague epidemic were low

Omg, this is really eerie - the writing and the photo.  The things we humans have to do in order to overpopulate the earth.  I like how you used the brick wall to create depth.  The artist statement really lends the photo a greater level of poignancy, and what an interesting bit of history.

In England, did't some guy figure out the plague was being spread through the drinking water that was contaminated from sewer waste.  Once they shut down the drinking supply from certain areas then people begin to get better.

You are referring to a much later outbreak of typhoid. Nothing to do with Bubonic plague carried by fleas on rats.

Hi , It had nothing at all to do with the water , the plague reached England and all of Europe  by merchant ships carrying goods from Asia it was carried by the rats it was not the rats themselves but the fleas that lived on the rats.

from what I recall, most people (at least in London) drank ale and ate cooked meat around the time of the plague. Ale starts off with boiling water, killing any germs and bacteria in the water. Then after a while stewing, hops, malted barley and yeast is added. This is then taken off the boil and allowed to ferment in warm rooms. Without Ale Britain would have crumbled away. But it was a type of Marmot that coughed and spat on fleas, the fleas then hitched rides on black rats (also infecting them in the process) that brought them from the Crusades (around Jerusalem) to Europe. Its the "infections are transported around the world because of....." type thing, more often then not it is because of humans.
